7 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Customers

Most business websites don't fail loudly. They fail quietly — a visitor lands, something feels off, and they're gone in eight seconds. You'll never know it happened. Here are the seven leaks we find most often when we audit small-business sites.

1. It loads in more than 3 seconds

Google's own research: over half of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds. Speed isn't a technical luxury — it's the front door of your shop.

2. It looks wrong on a phone

Pinch-to-zoom text, tiny buttons, horizontal scrolling. More than 60% of local-business searches happen on mobile — if your site fights the phone, your customers quietly choose a competitor whose site doesn't.

3. Nobody can tell what you do in 5 seconds

The five-second test: show your homepage to a stranger for five seconds. If they can't say what you sell and who it's for, your headline is failing. Your hero section is not the place to be clever — be clear.

4. There's no obvious next step

Every page should answer "what do I do now?" before it's asked — one clear button, visible without scrolling. If visitors have to hunt, most simply leave.

5. The trust signals are missing or fake-looking

Real reviews, a real address, a phone number that connects. Stock-photo testimonials with names like "Sue S." do more damage than no reviews at all — visitors smell filler.

6. Google can't see you

If your page titles are "Home" and your content is thin, you're invisible exactly where your customers search. Real titles, descriptions, structured data and a sitemap are table stakes in 2026.

7. The site hasn't changed in years

Copyright 2021 in the footer, a blog that stopped in 2023, services you no longer offer. A stale site tells visitors the business behind it might be stale too.

The good news

Every one of these is fixable — usually in weeks, not months. If you recognized your site in three or more of these, fixing it is cheaper than the invisible tax of lost customers. Browse our website design & development service — or just ask us in the chat bubble right now.

Can you fix my current site or must it be rebuilt?

Often we can surgically fix speed, mobile and CTA issues. We only recommend a rebuild when the foundation itself is fighting us — and we'll tell you honestly which one you have.
